Karwa Chauth Festival is a very significant occasion that is believed to strengthen the sacred marital bond between the Hindu husband and wife. The festival of Karva Chauth is an old traditional festival celebrated by keeping a day long fast by married women. On this auspicious day women observe the day long fast without having food or water and pray throughout the day for the prosperity and long life of their husbands. The ritual of keeping a fast on Karva Chauth denotes extreme love and commitment of a wife to her husband.
In India among the Hindu community marriage is considered as the most sacred bonding of life. Therefore, Karwa Chauth is celebrated with much joy, devotion and enthusiasm by every married woman. On this day the married ladies dress up in their best of cloths and wear golden and glass bangles along with glittering jewelry. A very important part of the tradition is to apply heena or mehendi on the palms. Mehendi is a long lasting pattern made with a type of dye on the hands of a woman at festive occasions. Without eating or drinking anything the married women ends their day long fast only after watching the moon at night and having the first bite of the food and first sip of the water from their husband’s hand.
When is Karwa Chauth
The term ‘Karwa’ means an earthen clay pot and ‘Chauth’ means the fourth day. Thus the festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated on the fourth day after full moon in the month of Kartik that usually comes in the month of October-November.
